about

A tale of the Living and Dying Moon, inspired by the Descent of Inanna.

Without the triumphant obscurity of the Night, no luminaries can be seen. This primordial Shade, the unliving Umbra - must be venerated for her gifts of Dread, Death and Darkness. As the Moon knows and continuously explores all phases and aspects of herself, so must we. When the Dark Goddess humbles us by removing our weapons and forcing us into discomfort, she does so not to punish us, not to create a wound, but to open a doorway to the healing medicine of death and rebirth.

lyrics

Hail, Queen of the East,
Daughter of the Moon,
Mistress of the Third Gate,
Bright Light of nights,
Fairest Daughter of All the Gods.

Offering her blood,
She set her Ear to the Underworld,
And set her gaze upon the World Beneath.
From the Great Above,
She set her heart on the Great Below.

The Great Waters trembled.

Descending from the Heavens,
The Queen of the Rising Sun
Placed her foot upon the Ladder of Lights.
Down she went,
Seeking passage through the Abzu.
Seeking the Abyss that Dreams beneath the World.
Seeking the Throne of Thrones,
In the most Southern Depths.
Seeking her Sister,
ERESHKIGAL!
Dread Queen of Corpses:
Most powerful Sorceress and Shade,
Seeking… the Mother of the Grave.

Most mighty and solemn
Scorned Mistress of the Abyss Where All Souls are Drowned:
NINKIGAL!

Oh, Great Infernal Empress:
Who sits upon the Throne of Evil,
Behind the Seven Unliving Gates.

[INANNA]

Horned Serpent of the Deep,
Plumed Serpent of the Dark,
Watcher in the Dismal Wastes:
Open the Door!
Open the Door!

Open the Door, Gatekeeper!
Open the Door, Neti!
Open the Door, Gatekeeper!
Blood of my blood!
Open the Door!

From the Great Above,
I set my heart upon
The Road from Which No Traveller Returns.

From the East I rose,
A star upon my brow.
Adorned, robed and crowned.

Open the Door, Gatekeeper!
Open the Door, Neti!
Open the Door, Gatekeeper!
Blood of my blood!
Open the Door!

I followed the Moon,
Into the Sunless West,
To come before the Queen of Death.

Open the Door, Gatekeeper!
Open the Door, Neti!
Open the Door, Gatekeeper!
Open the Door!

Open wide the Way Beneath,
Lest I cause the Dead to rise!
Open wide the tomb Below,
Lest I cause the Dead to rise!

[ERESHKIGAL]

The Queen of the Rising Sun is here,
She’s passed the Seven Gates,
Her power is gone, she is bare.
Yet, her light still resonates.

She who seeks the Great Below,
Must enter naked, and bowed low.

She who seeks the Queen of Dread,
Must have the crown torn from her head.

She who seeks the Unlit Throne,
Must sacrifice all that she has known.

She who seeks the Flameless Fire,
Must open her heart to the funeral pyre.

She who seeks the Unpaved Road,
Must never seek the Path of Gold.

She who seeks the Dreaming One,
Must say farewell to the light of the Sun.

She who seeks the Lightless Stars,
Must first meet Death:
ERESHKIGAL
